Kill it , cook it , eat it

I recently watched this series and found it really interesting and I won't be eating economy burgers and sausages again after watching it. I didn't see the first two series because the name of it didn't appeal to me but i wish I had now because it provided me with lots of information that I didn't know about how they make fast food and how animals are kept prior to eating which was horrible to see. I also found out that hotdogs are not made out of pork so looked at the tin in my cupboard and it is made from mechanically recovered chicken which sounds awful although I don't know what it is and economy burgers and sausages are mainly fat so from now on i'm sticking to butchers to get my meat.

I'll tell you what mechanically recovered meat is, but you might wish I hadn't!

When all the identifiable cuts of meat - steak, chops, chicken fillets, etc. - have been removed, everything that's left is put into a centrifuge which is operated at high speed so that all the remaining bits of meat are extracted as a kind of slurry which is then used to make cheap sausages, burgers, etc.  Although this can technically be described as 'meat' it will also contain bits of skin and probably other bits that I don't really like to think about too much.  Ears and nostrils spring to mind, but I'll leave the rest to your imagination!

I have actually seen this process on a visit to a factory and I've never eaten a cheap processed meat product since.

How weird.  Twelve hours after writing this post about mechanically recovered meat I watched a programme on BBC 1 entitled 'Britain's Really Disgusting Food'.  It was extremely interesting; did anybody else see it?

Thank you I threw away the hotdogs straight away.I am actually glad I watched this programme because I realized what I am eating and am only buying good meat now at least I think it is ( its more expensive anyway) and I will never buy economy sausages and burgers again.

I usually like to buy the more expensive things purely on taste, but am not too bothered about how the cheaper ones are made etc.  They usually taste decent in casseroles or covered in sauce etc. so that doesn't bother me too much.

Mechanically recovered makes them sound like robots though!

It's not so much the method of production, it's the fact that they contain parts of the animal that I would prefer not to eat.

When I saw what mechanically recovered meat looked like it made me feel sick I can't believe just to make cheaper products they need to get all the disgusting parts and do that to them i'd rather eat less meat than resort to buying the cheaper economy stuff.

Mechanically recovered doesn't exactly sound appetising, does it?  I guess most hot dog sausages are made this way - I don't think I could bring myself to eat them again!
If you don't like what you see - don't look!
