    Evening snacking

Welcome to this month's £10 Topic.  You have until Tuesday 23rd February at 2pm to have your say.  The best comment wins a £10 High Street Gift Voucher.

We'd love to hear your views on snacking in the evening

Which foods do you choose most often when snacking in the evening? What makes you snack in the evening?  How do you feel when you snack in the evening?

Is there anything specific/different about snacking in the evening compared with snacks at other times of day?  Do you choose different foods? Do you have different cravings at this time?

Do you tend to watch TV at the same time as snacking in the evening?
Your opinions are really making a difference!

I suppose that I tend to snack on sweeter things in the evening whilst during the day I am more likely to snack on savoury snacks.

I usually snack in the evenings if I am watching the TV.  I usually eat chocolate :-)  I allow myself one biscuit too.  I have to limit the chocolate intake as I have a soya intolerance and most chocolate contains soya lecithin.  I am also lactose intolerant so I eat plain dark chocolate.

Before the lactose intolerance caught up with me my perfect evening was watching something good on the TV and eating some nice milk chocolate.  I needed the chocolate after working for my employer and then doing my house work. The chocolate treats made me feel better.

    Re: Evening snacking

I tend not to snack. I'm more likely to have three proper meals during the day and that's it.

If I do snack, then it's usually a handful of digestive biscuits with a cup of tea when I get home from work (circa 6pm). My snacking will be mainly due to being very hungry when I get home - I have lunch at 12pm then dinner around 7.30pm, so there's a big gap! Other than that I tend not to snack. Not necessarily because I feel guilty (I'm only 11 stone!) but just because I don't get that hungry.

My cravings don't really change depending on the time of day. I'll happily eat anything, although usually have savoury things when I'm not eating digestives. And yes, always watch TV whilst snacking.

What a subject!  I am a rare bird in that I love to snack on practically anything in the evening, but really only when I am in by myself.  Is it a company thing?  I will on occasions search through the cupboards to find something that interests me at that time.  It could be cheese, crisps, chocolate or biscuits.   It can be sweets on occasions but that is usually during and just after the Chistmas and New year holidays when the store is full. I alsio have the guilt trip as I will often hide / destroy the evidence of my snacking from the returning eyes of my beautiful wife.  This is rather futile of my behalf as she knows everything about me and what I do on her occasional absences in the evening.

Thank you for sharing your secret with us Bob1175!  I snack more on my own than with my other half too.  Is anyone else like that?  It's probably a boredom thing.  Does anyone else get tempted by the ads on late night TV?  Doritos were a killer for me.  And when I was at uni I'd always snack on a bowl of cereal when I wasn't going out.  Does anyone else snack on cereal?

    Re: Evening snacking

I tend not to snack. IfI eat in the evenings it's usually my dessert that I couldn't fit after dinner eg yogurt or fruit. So, not sure if that's 'snacking' or 'finishing my dinner'? lol. (excuses excuses...)

If having an alcoholic drink which is rare but might happen say at Christmas watching a pay movie or something, then it would be some low fat crisps so the drink isn't too wet;)

I have a delicate digestion so anything fatty at night would be a really bad idea.

If genuinely hungry eg because I didn't have much dinner, then it would be cereal  before bed.

I don't think the snacking is very much different than during the day apart from the low fat crisps which I'd normally only have with some sandwhiches. The exception is New years Eve when for some strange reason, we eat the party packs of frozen things from the supermarket with a drink. They are done in the oven in 10 mins. Almost always the TV would feature in any evening snacking except for when we have friends round and we are having conversation and eat nibbles with a drink. Then though, I'd get some 'posher' nibbles in - fancy crisps, dips etc and try to ensure that one of them at least was low fat. There are some great lower fat nibbles around these days.

    Re: Evening snacking

I am terrible for snacking in the evening it was a major reason I put on weight.I used to eat chocolate hobnobs and get through the whole packet very easily but now if i'm hungry I have a ryvita with philladelphia light on or a special k peach and apricot bar. I think the problem with snacking in the evening is you don't get to burn it off before you go to bed. I mainly snack while watching tv because i'm relaxed and enjoy a nice treat while watching the soaps but i've realised that it doesn't need to be a full fat snack to be enjoyable.

    Re: Evening snacking

There's really no consistency at all in what I choose for evening snacking, it just depends what I fancy at the time.  Whether or not I do snack in the evening will largely depend on what we've had for dinner.  After anything with potatoes or pasta I probably will not get the munchies, but a rice-based meal will have me reaching for the snacks by 9 o'clock.

I am most definitely not a lover of chocolate and can go months on end without eating any at all.  But if we have some in the house, brought by guests or received for Christmas, birthday, etc., I have only to catch sight of it while we're watching TV in the evening and I can then eat a whole box at one go!  I won't say this makes me feel guilty, as I believe in eating what you want, but it sometimes makes me feel sick!

Cheese is probably my favourite, with biscuits, especially if we're enjoying some red wine at the same time.  It doesn't really matter what variety as we always have a good selection in but my guilty pleasure is Primula, spread thickly on rice crackers.

A bowl of cereal is always good.  I love cornflakes in the evening, or Jordan's Crunchy Oats.  Somehow Weetabix is only suitable for breakfast - no logic to that, I know.

I sometimes snack on fruit, but never an apple, orange, banana or similar.  It has to be something like grapes or cherries that can be picked at one at a time rather than eating a large piece in one go.

Can't really make a comparison with other times of day as I only tend to do it in the evening.  And only when we're sitting down in fron of the TV - if we're actually doing something rather than veging out I don't tend to get the urge to eat.

I have to go now as writing this has made me feel an uncontrolable desire for a biscuit!
